Laws Of Jericho

The Laws of Jericho

Let it be known that herein are the laws that all residents of the Township of Jericho must follow. These laws are to be followed without exception and the magistrate or sheriff of the town will enforce any breaches thereof. Should the victim of the crime be an official, or of noble title, the maximum sentence is automatically applied. The person who passes judgment also will determine the sentence, within the parameters of the law. Additional punishments may include lashes of the cat-o-nine-tails, incarceration, indentured servitude, fines, disfigurement and public humiliation in the form of incarceration in the stocks or crow's cage. Any sentence that is deemed too harsh may be brought before a higher authority (the council for Petty crime, a noble for Grave crime), but the ruling of this higher authority is final, and should the request for leniency be found unmerited, the judgment passed down from the higher authority must be harsher then the one passed down originally.

Petty Crime

These crimes are of a minor nature. They can be tried, judged and punished by the magistrate, with at least one depute as witness, and does not need to be brought before a tribunal of councilors. Petty Crimes are as follows:

Disturbing the Peace

Excessive noise, rowdiness, public drunkenness, interference of a merchant's place of work or business all constitutes disturbing the peace. Any action that the magistrate deems to be disruptive to the day to day proper and orderly functioning of the township, that does not fall under a more serious offense, can also be tried under this crime. The minimum sentence for the guilty is five lashes of the cat-o-nine-tails; the maximum is one day's incarceration.

Aiding and Abetting

Any who offer shelter, aid, or otherwise assist those who are wanted by the law for any crime are guilty of Aiding and Abetting. The only sentence for Aiding and Abetting is that the guilty suffer the same punishment as the criminal they are aiding, as well as 20 lashes of the cat-o-nine-tails.

Trespassing

Entering the property of another who is protected by the laws of the land without their express permission constitutes trespassing. Should the trespass lead to property damage, this crime falls under assault. Otherwise, the minimum sentence is 5 lashes of the cat-o-nine-tails; the maximum is a fine of 10 gold crowns.

Insulting an official

Insulting an official has occurred when any insult, to the honour or title of any official or person of noble rank, is given by one without said title or rank. The gravity of the insult shall determine the severity of the punishment, which may range from 5 lashes of the cat-o-nine-tails to the removal of the tongue.

Infernal Dealings

Should any person be found to being speaking nonsense, or about events or items that are beyond the ken of normalcy, or should they be found to be in possession of items that are not of this world, and clearly of infernal origin, they are to be detained, and cleansed by the law, through flogging or, in extreme cases, death. It is the duty of every resident of Jericho to detain those affected by the infernal, and bring them to the law. Should they resist, extreme measures may be taken, so long as the actions are within the law.

These crimes are of a more serious nature. They must be judged by at least three councilors, a majority needed to find guilt. The accused will be incarcerated by the magistrate until such a gathering may be formed. Grave Crimes are as follows:

Any taking of said property, whether it be from the owner's person, place of residence, or any other location, without the permission of said owner, constitutes theft. The severity of the crime is determined by both the value of what is taken, as well as the potential harm the theft brought the owner. The minimum sentence is restitution of the value of what was stolen from the guilty to the owner. The maximum sentence is the removal of the hand of the guilty.

Crimes against the Crown

Treason

Any act that constitutes a threat to the well being of the nation as a whole, or the disclosure of secret, be they military or civilian, to a power at odds with the nation, shall constitute treason. Conversion to a Dark God

It is illegal to convert to the worship of a dark God, or to fail to renounce such conversion. The Dark Gods are defined by the Church of Light as those Gods who only grant the Dark school of magic to their priests. The punishment for this crime is death by beheading. Should a person renounce this faith, and thus gain clemency for this crime, and later be proven of being a convert to a dark God, they will no longer be granted clemency, and the punishment shall be two deaths.

Other Crime

It is mandatory that any citizen of Jericho able to cast spells from memory, if said spells are not granted by a God, to register with the Mages Guild. Such registration requires only the name of the citizen, the spheres of magic they have access to, and the highest circle spell they may cast. No monetary compensation, or any further detail or other payment can be demanded by the Guild for said registration. Failure to complete said registry will cause said citizen to be branded a Hedge Wizard, and an outlaw, and be arrested as such. When they are captured, they will be given a single chance to register at that point, and should they fail to do so, they will be found guilty of Hedge Wizardry. The minimum punishment for this crime is the removal of the tongue. The maximum punishment is death. The Mages Guild is given special commendation from the council in that they may act to capture and detain said criminals until they can be brought to trial.
